Naïve and professional views of art and non-art: eye-vision-mind-neuroaesthetics

How do we differentiate art from non-art pictures, and particularly, how do contemporary naïve people look at pairs of art and similarly looking snapshots, where the analysis of their eye movement recordings could reveal a difference in neuro-aesthetic perception between artful picture and snapshot?

The Artistic Brain Beyond the Eye: Art and Communication Through the Visual Brain

What is painting, but a communication channel for the MESSAGE between artist and viewer? Artists first imagine a painting, using their “mind’s eye” image of a segment of their world. Next, using their genius, techniques, and skill, they transfer their mental representations onto the canvas. What is then the function of the externalised painting? It is to communicate a message to a viewer.

Synaesthesia, Picture Puzzles, Ambiguities – The Function of Synaesthetic Image Contents

One interesting aspect of vision is the occasional borderline overlap between contrasting sensory perceptions. For instance, we often find transmodal bridges, transitions and interactions between vision and hearing – a perceptual phenomenon known as synaesthesia. Synaesthesia may evoke certain qualities and meanings, simultaneously or in succession: Some humans may see a colour while hearing a particular word; others may hear a specific tone when viewing the colour blue, a plethera of other combinatorial sensory assocations also exist.
